We Finally Got Our First Look at All Things ’Only Murders in the Building’ Season 2 👀

Warning! There are spoilers for the Only Murders in the Building season 1 finale below. You’ve been warned!

If you’re a true-crime junkie (and really, who isn’t these days?), there’s no doubt you’ve watched Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short came together to create an instantly iconic TV trio while solving a murder that went down in their own apartment building. But if you know anything about true-crime stories, then you understand that ~deep secrets~ unfold the closer you get to cracking the case…which is exactly what happened at the end of season 1 of Only Murders once they ID’d Tim Kono’s killer!

Thanks to the Hulu powers that be, there’s even more of this show on the way. But when is Only Murders returning? Who killed Bunny?? And why was she wearing a tie-dye sweatshirt??? Fine, we can’t answer the last two Qs, but here’s everything we do know about when Only Murders in the Building returns for season 2.

So, is Only Murders in the Building season 2 actually happening?

That’d be a YES! The show has officially been renewed for a second round, which is a major relief considering the state we left Mabel, Charles, and Oliver in. After only a few episodes of season 1 aired, Hulu went ahead and pulled the trigger by confirming season 2 is well on the way.

Which cast members are returning for season 2?

Let’s look to Hulu’s season 2 press release for some clues, shall we?

Only Murders in the Building reflects the kind of creative excellence that is the hallmark of Hulu Originals. Steve, John, and Dan have created a uniquely captivating and entertaining series. The audience’s response to the delightful blend of mystery, humor, and emotion in the show has been overwhelming and we can’t wait to follow this unlikely trio on their next adventure,” said Craig Erwich, president, ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals.

Considering our fave trio was in some decidedly hot water at the end of season 1 and Hulu’s release confirms season 2 will continue following their antics, it’s pretty safe to say that Selena, Steve, and Martin will all be returning to tie up the loose ends massive plot holes.

A recently-published Vanity Fair article also gives us some insight into the second season and confirms that, given Bunny’s exceptionally dead look on the floor of Mabel’s apartment at the end of season 1, we’ll definitely be seeing Jane Houdyshell return in flashback form. Plus, Jackie Hoffman’s Uma and Michael Cyril Creighton’s Howard are said to be charged with Bunny’s posthumous arrangements, which will more than likely set the scene for a series of conflicts with the three main protagonists.

For showrunner and co-creator John Hoffman, spotlighting the late Arconia board president was important to include as a special kind of homage to the city: “I find them heroic, all of these women in New York that we see on the streets every day, pushing their carts, getting through it.”

Is anyone new joining the cast?

While she might be new to this series, a very familiar face is coming to the series. Deadline has reported that Cara Delevingne will be joining the cast as Alice, “a sophisticated art world insider who becomes enmeshed in the mystery.” We now know that Alice proves to be Mabel’s love interest (!!!) who puts her in touch with a side of herself she’s been neglecting in lieu of all of the other things going on in her personal life. “It was amazing to have [Selena and Cara] know each other and feel comfortable,” John revealed to Vanity Fair. “It’s a little sparky in all the right ways that makes you feel like, Oh, someone’s opening someone’s world.”

Amy Schumer also takes on a pivotal role in the first episodes of season 2 and, according to the showrunner, was “the most immediate yes we’ve gotten on the show.” The comedian knew Steve Martin from when she co-starred with him in the Broadway play Meteor Shower and was already a fan of the show. In Amy’s role, she is selfishly only interested in adapting the Only Murders podcast for the screen and wants to star in a feminist antihero adaptation via the perspective of Jan (aka the season 1 murderer). Buuuuuut the original three leads kind of need to clear their names first and foremost.

Shirley MacLaine will also make her debut in the second season, playing Bunny’s stoic mother. Per Vanity Fair, she and Amy’s character apparently get into a pretty heated argument when a $1 million painting that Bunny owned and kept in her home mysteriously ends up on Amy’s wall. *cue dramatic music*

When is season 2 of Only Murders in the Building coming out?

It wouldn’t be a mystery show if they didn’t have us guessing to figure out when it was coming back. On March 24, the show’s official Twitter page hinted at something huge when it posted a photo of an elevator with buttons clearly pressed.

Unfortunately, this still means we’ll have to wait a month for it to come back. Until then, why not rewatch season 1 again for clues? After all, Mabel did say there were unanswered questions left to sleuth….

Are there any new clips to hold us over in the meantime?

While the Oscars are typically all about ~cinema~, we still got a special treat during the 2022 awards show’s red carpet when a special teaser for season 2 of Only Murders in the Building aired. And it looks like things are getting very complicated for the Arconian trio. Not only that, but Cara Delevingne’s and Amy Schumer’s new characters are also featured! Watch below:

Asking the big Qs: Is there any news on season 3? 👀

Though Hulu has yet to confirm a third season, showrunner John Hoffman did manage to leave us with hope: “The emotional stories for our three main characters—that is our true connective tissue, in a world where a mystery television series tends to delve not so deeply a lot of times…The world just keeps opening up. I think it’s because of the number of apartments you can have in a building.”
